Chile’s millennial president-elect Gabriel Boric took sides in his first international incident: supporting pop music superstar Taylor Swift in a social media confrontation with Blur frontman Damon Albarn over his songwriting references.
Albarn, the British co-founder and songwriter of Gorillaz, had suggested that Swift didn’t write all of her own songs in a media interview, prompting an angry reaction from the American singer. Albarn later apologized.
Boric, 35, threw his support behind Swift in a tweet that quickly went viral in his country, reflecting how the former student protest leader is shaking up politics in Chile, the traditionally closest South American nation. .
“Here in Chile you have a huge group of supporters who know that you write your own songs from the heart,” Boric, a self-proclaimed Swift fan, told his 1.4 million Twitter followers. The tweet had 66,000 likes.
“Southern hugs Taylor,” said Boric, who will become Chile’s youngest democratically elected president when he takes office in March.
Swift had herself fired back at Albarn on Twitter.
“I was such a fan of yours until I saw this. I write ALL my own songs. Your mentality is completely wrong and SO damaging,” the 32-year-old singer wrote.
Albarn, 53, made his own mea culpa.
“I totally agree with you. I had a conversation about songwriting and sadly it was reduced to clickbait. I unreservedly and unconditionally apologize. Last thing I want to do is discredit your songwriting,” he said.
Boric’s team did not respond to a request for comment.
